(Ruth 1:1-10, 16-21)
A. It is possible to have a house and not have a home. (Verse 8)
B. It is possible to have a family and not have a home. (Verse 8)
C. Most homes are not really homes, but temporary staying places like a motel.
D. A home is a place where love is shown.
E. It is not a business contract but a loving place.
F. When you study the life of Elimelech, and Naomi, I can’t believe that he let his home get in the shape that he did.
G. Elimelech means "My God is King."
H. Naomi means "Pleasant."
I. What in the world happened to his home?
J. The same thing will happen to our home if we don’t guard against it.
- By the way, this didn’t happen overnight.
I believe there are three things that caused Elimelech’s home to turn into a house.
I. FAMINE Verse 1
A. There are 13 famines that are recorded in the Bible.
B. The book of Ruth was written during the day of Judges. (verse 1)
C. Famine came because of divine judgment.
THIS COULD BE HAPPENING IN OUR DAY.
D. I rather have a family and a home making a minimum wage than have a house and not a home.
- THERE WAS A BIGGER FAMINE GOING ON IN ELIMELECH’S LIFE! A SPIRITUAL FAMINE.
E. Elimelech was the head of the home. But because of his lack of faith, he turned his home into just a family in a house.
F. God takes care during the time of famine. Look at Boaz. Ruth 1:21-22. Ruth 2:1
II. SECOND PROBLEM ELIMELECH HAD WAS THAT HE WAS FAINTHEARTED.
A. When the finances are low and the funds are down, if you are not real careful, you will get fainthearted and miss God.
- YOU WILL MISS OUT ON THE PROVISIONS AND START CREATING
- ELIMELECH STARTED TO TRY TO HELP GOD!
- GOD DOESN’T NEED YOU TO HELP HIM; JUST WAIT ON HIM!
- YOU DO WHAT YOU CAN AND GOD WILL DO WHAT YOU CAN’T.
B. Elimelech takes his family to Moab.
- Moab was born out of a bad situation.
"Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father."
- This is where Moab came from.
"Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; over Philistia will I triumph."
C. You could see Moab from Bethlehem.
D. It was between 20 and 30 miles; a day’s journey.
E. One day getting there, 10 years getting back.
F. There is no record that Elimelech got drunk, committed adultery, or abused his family.
G. He just got out of the will of God.
III. THE THIRD PROBLEM ELIMELECH HAD WAS HIS FAMILY
A. It is a real possibility that Naomi influenced her husband to go to Moab.
B. The reason I say that is because if she had only gone to be in submission to her husband, she would have returned to Bethlehem as soon as Elimelech died. Ruth 1:3-4
C. Elimelech died before their sons get married.
- Wife, you should be careful how you influence your husband.
- You may be left alone to bear the blunt of things.
D. Naomi was so far from God that she tells her daughters-in-law to go back four times. Ruth 1:8,11,12, and 15
E. She heard that there was bread in Bethlehem.
F. When you are out of the will of God, you will only hear of the blessings of God (verse 6).
THESE THREE THINGS HAPPENED AT THE END OF CHAPTER 1.
THEY ALSO HAPPEN AT THE END OF EVERY SERVICE.
1. NAOMI CAME HOME.
2. RUTH GOT HELP.
3. ORPAH CHOSE TO GO TO HELL.
EVERY FAMILY NEEDS A THREE-FOLD HOME.
1. DOMESTIC HOME.
2. CHURCH HOME.
3. HEAVENLY HOME.
